Dr. Joan Saary (MD '97, PGME '06, PhD '08) is an Occupational Medicine specialist with a focus on extreme environments. As the Director of the Division of Occupational Medicine, she also oversees Aerospace Medicine education initiatives. She serves as Chair of Aerospace Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is a Past President of the Occupational Medicine Specialists of Canada. A consultant to various organizations including the Royal Canadian Air Force/Canadian Forces Environmental Medicine Establishment and the Canadian Space Agency, she was one of the ‘Top 25 Women in Defence’ in 2021 and has longstanding involvement in the development of Medical Standards with the International Space Station program. Currently, Dr. Saary is in the process of developing a Fellowship in Aerospace Medicine which will enable practicing physicians to gain specialized training in aerospace medicine with a unique Canadian focus.
