Description: | Both clinical and research fellowship are available. The fellow is expected to conduct one or more research projects. Our recent projects have examined the pathophysiology of movement disorders (such as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and tremor), the role of the basal ganglia in voluntary and involuntary movement, and the mechanisms of action of deep brain stimulation. Our laboratory also investigates the organization of cortical inhibitory and excitatory pathways in the human motor cortex and cortical plasticity following peripheral injury such as amputation or nerve and muscle transfer. The fellow will achieve proficiency in advanced methods in human neurophysiology and motor control, including electromyography, transcranial brain stimulation (single pulse, paired pulse and repetitive stimulation), recording and detailed analysis local field potentials from the basal ganglia, computer modeling and MRI co-registration of evoked potentials, electroencephaolgraphic cortical rhythms, and movement-related cortical potentials. Clinical fellows will have the opportunity to attend the movement disorders clinic, perform detailed electrophysiological assessment of patients with movement disorders, and train in electromyography and botulinum toxin injections. |

Description: | This one-year fellowship program provides comprehensive training in adult sleep neurology with a broad exposure to neurological and non-neurological sleep disorders. The program’s focus on sleep neurology makes it unique among other sleep fellowship programs in Canada. Specifically, this sleep neurology fellowship will focus on conditions that sleep neurologists commonly manage, due to the neurological underpinnings of these disorders (e.g. narcolepsy/central disorders of hypersomnia, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, restless legs syndrome/sleep-related movement disorders, and sleep-related epilepsy). We will also closely examine how common sleep disorders (e.g. sleep-disordered breathing and insomnia) are closely associated with common neurological disorders. This sleep neurology fellowship is based at the Division of Neurology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, which is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Fellows will have the opportunity to work closely with the sleep physicians at Sunnybrook, as well as with sleep specialists at other sites affiliated with the University of Toronto. They will also have the opportunity to design and pursue a research project of their choice. Goals and Objectives: The trainee will: (1) develop expertise in the evaluation and management of patients with all forms of sleep disorders including sleep-related breathing disorders, insomnia, central disorders of hypersomnolence, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, and sleep-related movement disorders; (2) become proficient in performing and interpreting polysomnograms, multiple sleep latency tests, maintenance of wakefulness tests, as well as home sleep monitoring (e.g. oximetry, home sleep apnea testing, and actigraphy); (3) learn the indications for and interpretation of neurophysiological, laboratory and imaging investigations in sleep medicine. The duration of the fellowship is one year (July 1 – June 30). Fellows who are interested in doing research can do an additional 1-2 years of training focused on clinical research, depending on the availability of funding. Description: | Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, an academic teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, is offering a one year fellowship position in Stroke Neurology (with the option to extend to 2 years). Sunnybrook has a multidisciplinary stroke program with strong collaboration from neuroradiology, vascular neurosurgery and neurocritical care. Our centre has a bi-plane neurointerventional angiography suite, two 1.5T and one 3.0T clinical MRI scanners (as well as additional dedicated research scanners), 4 CT scanners and PET-CT. We have a dedicated NeuroDoppler ultrasound laboratory which is the only Intersocietal Accreditation Commission Vascular Accreditation (ICAVL) accredited laboratory in Toronto for both carotid US and transcranial Doppler US. We have an active research program and participate in a number of high profile clinical trials in both acute stroke management and stroke prevention. Sunnybrook also houses the Sunnybrook Research Institute and has expertise in clinical epidemiology and stroke health services research. Our team consists of 6 dedicated stroke physicians (Drs. Julia Hopyan, David Gladstone, Mark Boulos, Amy Yu, Rick Swartz, and Houman Khosravani), 3 vascular neurosurgeons, and 7 neuroradiologists. Description: | The Stroke & Cerebrovascular Medicine Fellowship Program at the St. Michael’s Hospital's Comprehensive Stroke Center has availability for one to two stroke fellows per year. The goal of the fellowship is to train future neurologists who can offer highly specialized care to patients with cerebrovascular diseases, especially ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Core training will include stroke inpatient and outpatient evidence-based-management, acute and hyper-acute stroke care of patients in the emergency room and critical care units, along with opportunities to participate in electives: Interventional neuroradiology, neuroradiology, Trauma-Neurocritical ICU, Neuro-ophthalmology, CNS demyelination clinic, Rehabilitation rotation, and Carotid US lab. Opportunity to spend some time in community hospitals with stroke units may also be arranged with our partners in the GTA area. Research participation is encouraged. St. Michael's Hospital and Li Ka Shing Research Institute have exceptional research opportunities available. Led by the director of stroke research, Dr. Gustavo Saposnik, who is the Editor in Chief of World Stroke Academy and among the board of directors of World Stroke Organization, the stroke fellowship at SMH and University of Toronto will allow the trainee to get exposure to world-class research. Areas of high impact include equity in stroke care, stroke outcome research, stroke economics, AI in stroke, brain-heart interaction, stroke neuroimaging, quality improvement projects in stroke, stroke robotics among other avenues to get exposure in state of the art research initiatives. The SMH stroke program aims to create future leaders in stroke. The trainees will have the opportunity to get exposure and training in development of protocols, stroke systems of care models, understanding equity in stroke care, basics of health economics, business and operations planning and other avenues that impact patient care in stroke programs. The trainee will have the opportunity to work with various faculty including Atif Zafar, MD who is the medical director of the stroke program at SMH. This is a busy fellowship where fellows will be expected to supervise residents on service. Inhouse alteplase and EVT attendance is required as part of training for fellows during and after hours when on call (fellows take home calls), among other clinical duties. Protected research and elective time will also be guaranteed. Main highlights
Eligibility: Applicants with excellent academic accomplishments, fluency in English language, and who have completed postgraduate (residency) training in Neurology are considered for interviews. We also consider applications from Emergency Medicine physicians and Internists for the 6 months mini-fellowship or a full year program. Description: | Stroke-Neurovascular Fellowship Opportunity University Health Network Stroke Program The University Health Network (UHN) Stroke Program is offering one funded Stroke-Neurovascular fellowship position. UHN is a multi-site academic teaching hospital network, that houses one of Ontario’s Regional Stroke Centres at the Toronto Western Hospital (TWH) site. We provide comprehensive clinical stroke care, including hyperacute care with thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy, inpatient stroke unit care, and specialized Stroke Prevention Services. We also have an active clinical stroke research program with participation in many national and international clinical trials in acute stroke and secondary stroke prevention therapy. Our Team includes six stroke neurologists, five nurse practitioners and one stroke-clinic nurse. There is strong clinical and research collaboration with Interventional Neuroradiology, Diagnostic Neuroradiology and Vascular Neurosurgery. Our Neurovascular Unit (NVU), a provincially-designated stroke unit, is a 20-bed ward that includes Level 2 (high-acuity) and regular ward care for patients with stroke and other neurovascular conditions. It is managed by a multidisciplinary team consisting of stroke neurologists, vascular neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists, nurse practitioners, and a dedicated interprofessional allied health team, as well as medical students, residents, and fellows. We have specialized outpatient services. Our TIA and Minor Stroke Unit (TAMS) is a dedicated 7-day a week rapid assessment day-unit designed to provide access to same-day clinical evaluation, investigations, and allied health assessment for patients with high-risk TIA and minor stroke. Other stroke prevention services include the Stroke Prevention Clinic for secondary stroke prevention (~3,000 visits a year), and subspecialized, multidisciplinary outpatient care including: Stroke in Young Adults (SiYA) Program, Combined CNS Vasculitis Clinic, Stroke in Women Clinic, the Pediatric Transition in Stroke Clinic, Adult Moyamoya Clinic, and the Neurovascular Clinic. FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM: We offer 1-year clinical (Stroke Expert) and 2-year combined clinical and research (Stroke Scholar) fellowships that align with the National Stroke Fellowship of the Canadian Stroke Consortium (CSC). Certification will be granted nationally through the CSC and through the University of Toronto upon successful completion of the fellowship. Clinical care: Fellows in our UHN-TWH Stroke-Neurovascular Fellowship Program will participate in the emergency assessment and treatment of patients with acute stroke and TIA, in inpatient stroke management, in outpatient care in the Stroke Prevention Clinic and in subspecialized Stroke/Neurovascular clinics of interest. There are also opportunities for participation in electives provided across the stroke care spectrum such as in Thrombosis, Stroke Rehabilitation, and Pediatric Stroke. Education: Fellows will participate in educational rounds including local Neurovascular radiology rounds, Neurovascular journal club, city-wide Neurovascular rounds, and daily multidisciplinary clinical stroke rounds on the Neurovascular Unit. Fellows will present at the National CSC Stroke Fellow Rounds with opportunities to participate in other national educational activities. Research: There is protected time for at least one major scholarly project. Fellows also participate in recruitment for clinical research trials. Pursuit of further graduate work can be accommodated during the two-year Stroke Scholar fellowship. The unique variety of multidisciplinary subspecialty neurovascular clinics and availability of highly advanced imaging techniques at UHN creates ample research opportunity. Description: | We offer an integrated one year subspecialty training to those interested to learn about neurological issues that occur at the different stages of women's lives from early adulthood, pregnancy, perimenopause, and aging. The focus of this program is to develop expertise in the management of four key pillars of neurological conditions with sex-specific focus: headache, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and cerebrovascular disease. Elective time will also be offered in sleep neurology, obstetrics/obstetrical medicine, neuroendocrine, neuromuscular and neuropsychiatry. During this time, the fellows will have an opportunity to generate research ideas while learning to apply sex- and gender- sensitive methods in health research.
