Description: | Both clinical and research fellowship are available. The fellow is expected to conduct one or more research projects. Our recent projects have examined the pathophysiology of movement disorders (such as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and tremor), the role of the basal ganglia in voluntary and involuntary movement, and the mechanisms of action of deep brain stimulation. Our laboratory also investigates the organization of cortical inhibitory and excitatory pathways in the human motor cortex and cortical plasticity following peripheral injury such as amputation or nerve and muscle transfer. The fellow will achieve proficiency in advanced methods in human neurophysiology and motor control, including electromyography, transcranial brain stimulation (single pulse, paired pulse and repetitive stimulation), recording and detailed analysis local field potentials from the basal ganglia, computer modeling and MRI co-registration of evoked potentials, electroencephaolgraphic cortical rhythms, and movement-related cortical potentials. Clinical fellows will have the opportunity to attend the movement disorders clinic, perform detailed electrophysiological assessment of patients with movement disorders, and train in electromyography and botulinum toxin injections. |

Description: | This one-year fellowship program provides comprehensive training in adult sleep neurology with a broad exposure to neurological and non-neurological sleep disorders. The program’s focus on sleep neurology makes it unique among other sleep fellowship programs in Canada. Specifically, this sleep neurology fellowship will focus on conditions that sleep neurologists commonly manage, due to the neurological underpinnings of these disorders (e.g. narcolepsy/central disorders of hypersomnia, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, restless legs syndrome/sleep-related movement disorders, and sleep-related epilepsy). We will also closely examine how common sleep disorders (e.g. sleep-disordered breathing and insomnia) are closely associated with common neurological disorders. This sleep neurology fellowship is based at the Division of Neurology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, which is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Fellows will have the opportunity to work closely with the sleep physicians at Sunnybrook, as well as with sleep specialists at other sites affiliated with the University of Toronto. They will also have the opportunity to design and pursue a research project of their choice. Goals and Objectives: The trainee will: (1) develop expertise in the evaluation and management of patients with all forms of sleep disorders including sleep-related breathing disorders, insomnia, central disorders of hypersomnolence, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, and sleep-related movement disorders; (2) become proficient in performing and interpreting polysomnograms, multiple sleep latency tests, maintenance of wakefulness tests, as well as home sleep monitoring (e.g. oximetry, home sleep apnea testing, and actigraphy); (3) learn the indications for and interpretation of neurophysiological, laboratory and imaging investigations in sleep medicine. The duration of the fellowship is one year (July 1 – June 30). Fellows who are interested in doing research can do an additional 1-2 years of training focused on clinical research, depending on the availability of funding. Who Can Apply: Applicants should have completed an accredited training program in Neurology, Internal Medicine, or Psychiatry prior to the start date. Applicants must be eligible for a certificate authorizing postgraduate education from the CPSO. If you are interested in joining our team for this fellowship opportunity, please send a copy of (i) your CV and a (ii) cover letter outlining your interest in this fellowship program, as well as your clinical and research experience to: Dr. Mark Boulos |
